Most of us are already aware of the damaging effects the sun has on our skin, after all it is the number one cause of premature ageing. It has been an important topic for several years and one that is repeated over and over again and for good reason. 

With that said, I would like to share a few essential shopping tips in readiness for summer because it is always a good idea to review our skincare products every season, or at least twice a year (summer and winter) to accommodate environmental changes and the nutritional needs of our skin.

Go lighter

With summer just around the corner it’s a great time to switch to a lighter day cream. Choose one with a high level of sunscreen even if you wear makeup that contains an SPF (often SPF 15). Although A + B doesn’t equal C when it comes to applying multiple products with sunscreen, the one with the highest SPF will prevail.


If you wear makeup, consider reducing the amount of product layering by switching to an all-in-one product for daytime use such as a tinted moisturiser, BB or CC cream. These multitasking products hydrate skin, protect from uv damage and provide coverage for a flawless complexion, all in one easy application without skin feeling overloaded in the warmer months.

Up the antioxidants

Summer is a good time to introduce a Vitamin C product in your morning skincare regimen if you are currently not using one. Not only does Vitamin C provide excellent antioxidant benefits but it can also help reduce UV damage. Even high rated SPF products will not completely block out all of the sun's UV rays so a good Vitamin C serum can help void any uv absorbed by the skin.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

Exfoliating regularly is just as important as cleansing. As we age our cellular turnover decreases and our skin is not as effective at shedding unwanted dead skin cells. Exfoliating 2-3 times per week with either a physical (granular scrub) or chemical (alpha hydroxy acids) exfoliator will not only remove unwanted dead skin cells but also improve skin clarity and tone, reduce imperfections and allow for better product absorption.

Feed your cells

Vitamin A is the most researched and dermatologist recommended ingredient for correcting skin ageing. Vitamin A (think 'A' for Ageing) is a cell communicating ingredient. This means that when Vitamin A penetrates the skin it attaches itself to our developing skin cells like a magnet, providing valuable nutrients and helping to increase cellular turnover. This results in a younger looking skin by improving skin firmness and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and hyperpigmentration.
